JUNE-JULY 2003 NEWS AND EVENTS
1. LEVINE AND PAULSON LEAD TOUR OF GREECE
From May 23-June 14, Prof. Daniel Levine and lecturer George Paulson are leading
a study tour through Greece. This three-week study tour of Greece will focus
on significant works of art and sites relevant to the history and culture
of Greece. To this end, the tour will visit important museum collections,
and archaeological sites in Athens
and Attica, the Peloponnese,
Boeotia, the islands of Crete,
Euboea and Melos, and the shrine of Apollo at Delphi. These lucky students
will encounter healing sanctuaries, pan-Hellenic game sites, Mycenaean citadels,
Minoan palaces, Byzantine churches, sacred caves, oracular
sites, fortifications, battlefields, and religious pilgrimage sites, such
as Eleusis. For more information about this year's tour, visit Prof.
Levine's website. The tour is usually offered every other year, so please
visit the site if you think you might be interested for 2005.
2. CLASSICAL STUDIES HAS RECORD NUMBER OF MAJORS
Classical
Studies graduated five majors at the Fulbright ceremony this May: Mara Dabrishus,
Jackie Mahaffey, Tony Nguyen, Nathan Sharpe, and Spencer Watson. Congratulations
to these fine students! At this moment, there are 37 majors in Classical Studies
at the University of Arkansas. This record number of majors should make us
all proud.

U OF A ETA SIGMA PHI TEAM WINS NATIONAL COMPETITION
The University of Arkansas sent ten student delegates to the University of
Oklahoma in April for the 75th annual convention of Eta Sigma Phi, the national
honorary society for students who excel in the study of Ancient Greek, Latin,
and Classics.
The U of A fielded two teams in the CERTAMEN, a college-bowl competition in
knowledge of the Classics. Both Arkansas teams defeated their opponents in
the first round, and one U of A team went completely undefeated, winning the
competition. This is the second time in five years that an Arkansas team has
won this national title. The members of the winning team included Classical
Studies students Glen Travis Blakney, Rachel Bushkuhl, Jason Connolly, and
Nathan Sharpe. For pictures and general information on Eta Sigma Phi, go to
our chapter website.
In addition, the national delegates elected U of A Classical Studies major
Aaron Randolph to the office of MEGAS GRAMMATEUS (national secretary). The
2003 U of A Classics T-shirt, designed by Classics major Jacob Lewis, won
second prize in the national T-shirt contest. The shirt includes quotations
from Vergil and Theocritus (in Latin and Greek), and an image from a 5th-century
BCE Greek vase (Apollo and Laocoon).
