Greetings from the Division of Student Affairs at the University of Arkansas.

We are pleased to learn of your interest in graduate assistantship opportunities within the Division. Currently, we teach over 50 graduate students through assistantships in Student Affairs. Each assistantship plays an important role in helping us achieve our mission of Connecting Students to Success. Graduate assistantships not only offer tuition waivers and stipends but also offer practical work experience to many graduate students seeking professional careers in student affairs and higher education administration. For this reason, we consider each assistantship an apprenticeship, where students learn to connect theory to practice in their chosen professions. We hope that you find several assistantships that appeal to you and that you will pursue them. We wish you success in your studies and graduate experience at the University of Arkansas. Please let any members of our staff know of any questions that you may have about assistantships within the Division of Student Affairs or about the University of Arkansas.

Sincerely,

Johnetta Cross Brazzell, Ph.D.
Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs
The University of Arkansas

Division of Student Affairs Graduate Assistantship
Interview Days 2008

Things to Know

The Division of Student Affairs Graduate Assistantship Interview Days are intended to provide both new and returning graduate students an opportunity to interview for graduate assistantships, make visits to campus, obtain important academic program information, and meet with faculty, staff and current students. All graduate students seeking assistantships in the Division of Student Affairs are encouraged to attend Interview Days. Those students not able to attend may make arrangements for phone interviews.

Graduate Admission

All candidates for graduate assistantships must be accepted to their academic programs prior to their participation in assistantship interviews. For those who are required to have an assistantship as condition of their admission, proof of application and transcripts (admissibility) may be requested.

Registration for Interview Days

Candidates planning to participate in Interview Days are required to complete a common application, included on this website, along with submitting a letter of interest and their resume. Candidates will be asked to indicate all assistantships they would like to be considered for on the application. Candidates may interview for multiple assistantships (up to 10). Resumes will be distributed to all assistantship sites listed on candidate applications for consideration.

Travel Arrangements to Fayetteville, Arkansas

Graduate assistantship candidates who may be traveling by air should explore flights into the Northwest Arkansas Regional Airport. The airport code for Northwest Arkansas Regional Airport (XNA). Please allow plenty of time in your travel plans to be present for all scheduled activities.

Interview Attire

Graduate Assistantship Interview Days are a time for you to meet with prospective assistantship sites and make your best impression. To that end, appropriate interview attire is recommended. For those who might be participating in any optional evening activities, business casual attire is recommended.

Weather

Average temperatures in the Northwest Arkansas area for the month of February are highs in the low 50’s and lows in the low 20s. Please plan accordingly.

Assistantship Process and Decisions

All graduate assistantship sites within the Division of Student Affairs work collaboratively to find the best fit for applicants. Candidates will be asked to provide a rank order for those assistantships they interview for upon their departure. A matching process will then occur, where candidates will be matched according to their preferences and the preferences of assistantship sites. Candidates will then be extended only one assistantship offer. There are no guarantees of an offer in this process, however, most generally are offered positions through this process. Therefore it would be advantageous to interview for multiple assistantships to improve your chances of finding a suitable assistantship.

Graduate assistantship applicants will be notified of any assistantship offers approximately one week after the Graduate Assistantship Interview Days and will have until Tuesday, April 15, 2008 to make decisions on acceptance of assistantship offers.
