  Fundraising Goals for Fulbright College

The J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences is a university leader in attracting private donor support, as it should be. Our scientists are uncovering the secrets of the human genome, discovering effective new methods for treating addiction, and leading the effort to bring the latest technologies into our schools and businesses.

Our artists and scholars are equally productive. They regularly offer outstanding plays, concerts, and art exhibits, as well as add to our understanding of state and national politics, social welfare reform movements, human psychology, and the history and culture of the South.

Since the beginning of the University of Arkansas’ Campaign for the Twenty-First Century in 1998, generous private donors have contributed almost $56 million to Fulbright College. I wish I could thank each of our donors personally for the difference they have made in the success of our students and faculty.

A major gift to a college or university generally represents an expression of a donor’s personal values, ideals, and goals, and often, a deep appreciation for the value of an education. A gift to Fulbright College, for example, might be made to create a personal or family legacy, as well as provide the donor the opportunity to join in the university’s success. Often, our alumni and friends want to give back to a College they feel was crucial in helping them build meaningful careers and lives, while others want to create a memorial to a close friend, mentor, or family member.

Fulbright College is working to build the future that Senator Fulbright envisioned years ago, one that arises, like the best philanthropy, “from our own minds and hearts.”

I ask you to take a moment and look over the goals we have set for Fulbright College. If you have ever wondered how you might be able to show your appreciation for a professor or friend, for the days you spent on this campus, or simply for the quality of your education and the doors it has opened for you, please give me a call. I would be happy to work with you. Together we can discover the legacy you wish to leave for the future.

Major Fundraising Initiatives

Fulbright College seeks support in three areas: faculty, students, and programs.

For example, when seeking support for faculty, our top priorities are establishing endowments for chairs, professorships, and research funds. Such endowments will allow our programs to compete with the best in the nation.

For our students, the College seeks to raise funds for Chancellor's Scholarships and study abroad scholarships. Our graduate students need endowed research funds as well as assistantships, which will allow us to increase their stipends to a nationally competitive level.

In 2000, two new programs were created in the College: the Diane D. Blair Center of Southern Politics and Society and the School of Social Work. Additional private support is critical to ensuring that these important initiatives get off to the right start.

The Fulbright College Office of Development is assisting the University of Arkansas bands in raising $5 million to endow two graduate assistantships, a band travel account, and a fund for acquiring and maintaining instruments. Most importantly, student performers need more scholarships. Not only are scholarships necessary in allowing students to practice and perform without financial pressure, but they also assist faculty in recruiting and retaining talented performers.

KUAF operates 24 hours a day, and like many public radio stations, features a program schedule of national and international news from National Public Radio mixed with local news, classical music, and entertainment programs. The Department of Journalism and Fulbright College jointly mange KUAF, which receives nearly 75% of its budget through private support from members, corporate underwriters, and foundations. These private funds pay for programming.

Our goal is to endow KUAF programming, for today's listeners and for the future.
