| The Fulbright College department
of music will pressent the 2008 Starr Young Artist Piano Competition
at the Walton Arts Center and at the UA music department, with
events Friday and Saturday, April 4 and 5.
The Starr Young Artist Piano Competition was founded 21 years
ago by UA piano professor Carolyn Hickson. It is an
annual competition featuring piano players ages 8-18 being judged
by well-known artists and professors. This year the judges
will be Seth Carlin, chair of keyboards at Washington University,
St. Louis; Jeongwon Ham, associate professor of piano at the University
of Oklahoma; and Jura Margulis, associate professor of piano at
the University of Arkansas. Awards for the competition range
from $100 for 3rd place beginners’ level to the Chancellor’s
Award of $1,000 to the winning 17-18 year-old participant.
The public is welcome to attend following events scheduled for
this year.
On Friday, April 4th, Seth Carlin will hold a Piano Masterclass
for non-contestants at 10:30 a.m. at the Walton Arts Center and
Jura Margulis will perform a piano recital at 7 p.m. at the Walton
Arts Center.
The Finals Concert featuring young finalists who will be playing
for first place as well as medals and prizes will take place on
Saturday, April 5, at 7:15 p.m. in the Walton Arts Center. Admission
for these events is free.
