What is the First Year Experience?

Group of students
The First Year Experience Course (ARSC 1001) has been designed to help you make the most of your first year on the University of Arkansas campus. By teaming you with a knowledgeable faculty/staff mentor in Fulbright College and a group of peers, we hope to help ease the transition process you’re bound to experience during this critical year.

As an FYE freshman, you and approximately 20 other students will take at least 3 courses together—two core courses and a one-hour, one-credit FYE course. If you’re an FYE transfer or non-traditional student, you’ll enroll in a the FYE course specifically for transfer and non-traditional students. Your FYE mentor will provide a weekly forum for your group to discuss problems, learn about University and community resources, learn skills essential to college success, and get to know one another better. By participating in the FYE program, you’ll receive the additional benefit of being able to participate in early priority registration for the Spring 2006 semester.

To participate in the FYE program, follow these simple instructions:
• First, choose an FYE section that is grouped with classes you would like to take this fall. The FYE sections and corresponding core courses are listed on the bottom of this page. FYE students are guaranteed a spot in at least two courses. HINT: since FYE sections fill quickly, it is advisable to choose at least two FYE sections (a first choice and a second choice) that appeal to you.
• Once you decide on an FYE section, go to the FYE registration table in the Fulbright College Scheduling room (Arkansas Union 512) and pick up the corresponding form needed to register for your desired FYE section. Each FYE section will hold only 20 students, and students are registered on a first-come-first-served basis. If your primary choice section is full, pick up the form for your second choice.
• Commit to participating in FYE by signing page one of the form. NOTE: You may be administratively dropped from the corresponding core courses that are grouped with your FYE section if you withdraw from the one-hour FYE session with your mentor.
• Turn in page one of your signed form at the FYE registration table, and we will register you into all of the specified courses. Transfer/non-traditional students will be registered into the appropriate FYE course only. Use page two of the FYE registration form to complete your schedule. You will then register for the other classes you have selected by completing your on-line registration.

If you have additional questions, contact Donna Draper, ddraper@uark.edu, or Dave Dawson, daved@uark.edu.
