What are you looking for today?
Beginning in Spring 2003, CAPS offers a Consultant-on-Duty to the students, faculty, and staff of the University. To utilize the Consultant, call or come by CAPS during select office hours:
The Consultant-on-Duty seeks to serve our eligible constituents on a first-come, first-served basis. However, emergencies and people with an urgent need for immediate consultation will be seen ahead of individuals whose need for service is less urgent.
When you arrive, a secretary will ask you to complete a Request for Consultation. If you have not been to CAPS in the past six months, the secretary may also ask you to complete a Consultee Descriptive Information questionnaire and a Consent Form. When other people already are waiting to see the Consultant-on-Duty, the secretary or a member of the clinical staff may ask you a few questions to assess how urgently you need to consult with someone.
Your office consultation will last approximately 30 minutes. During
the visit, the consultant will ask for information about you and the nature
of your concerns. We aim to assess the nature and severity of the problem
you are facing, explore what you have tried on your own to cope with the
problem, and then try to identify additional resources and/or strategies
which might help you to resolve the problem. If group, couple, or individual
counseling is indicated, the Consultant-on-Duty will discuss counseling options
with you. If you choose to pursue counseling at CAPS, our secretaries will
gladly assist you with scheduling.
Consultations will be guarded as confidential within ethical and legal limits. Due to clinical and ethical considerations, we will not schedule appointments or accept requests for service through email.
CAPS Clinical staff includes both male and female professionals from social work, psychology, and professional counseling. Psychiatric consultation is available only for individuals who are actively engaged in counseling at CAPS.
Email is not a secured form of communication. In order to protect confidentiality and your privacy, clinical services and responses to clinical inquiries--including scheduling or cancelling appointments--will NOT be addressed through email. If you have questions or comments about this webpage, contact CAPS at 575-5276.
