Services
- CONSULTATION:
CAPS provides a wide-range of consultations to students, students' partners,
staff, and faculty of the University. Some consultation services are also
available to members of the community beyond the University. Consultations
offer the consumer an opportunity to get expert information about a situation
or problem. CAPS offers a few types of consultations. Due to the loss of confidentiality,
we do not and will not conduct consultative services through
email.
- Office Consultations offer
individuals the opportunity to meet with one of our professional staff
and discuss options for addressing some distress. The office consultation
alone might provide enough information and strategies to help the individual
cope satisfactorily and healthfully. If counseling is indicated, the consultant
will discuss options for group, individual, couple, or family therapy.
This type of consultation is available to members of the University
only.
- Mental Health
Consultations offer individuals the opportunity to discuss concerns about
someone else--e.g., a loved one, friend, neighbor, roommate, coworker,
or student. We make ourselves available to discuss concerns which friends
and families may have about their loved ones.
- Educational
Consultations allow our staff to share their expertise on particular topics
or situations. These range from working with residence hall staff about student concerns
to talking with other departments about staff development programs, working
environments, or interpersonal relationships. Because these consults are
not about an individual or group of individuals, educational consultations
may occur through email. This type of consultation is available to not only
members of the University but also the member of the public at large.
- Case Consultations
are available to health care providers not only in the area but also throughout
the state, region, nation, and world. These consultations allow us to
share our expertise with other professionals.
- If you are a healthcare
provider and one of our clinical staff has expertise
which might benefit you in serving one of your patients, please call for a
consultation.
- If you are eligible
for and request services at CAPS, then with your written
authorization, your health care provider may contact us to get advice or
provide an udpate on your progress. Also with your written authorization,
we may contact your other health care provider to do the same. These providers
often include (but are not limited to) your physician or nurse-practitioner
and previous psychologists, counselors, social workers, or psychiatrists.
- EMERGENCY
SERVICES: The clinical staff provide emergency
service 24-hours a day, 365 days per year--including academic breaks and University
holidays. Staff are available to assist with situations that require immediate
attention. Simply call 575-CAPS (2277). Due to clinical and ethical considerations,
we do not and will not conduct emergency services through
email.
- COUNSELING
AND PSYCHOTHERAPY: CAPS offers a variety of therapy groups as well as short-term counseling for
individuals, couples, and families. CAPS staff members work within a broad
range of theories and approaches in designing effective services for each
client. We emphasize time-limited treatment, which identifies a focus
for counseling and aims to deal with that particular issue within a relatively
brief time. The clinical staff will be happy to discuss referral options
with you if extended or long-term care is indicated. We do not provide
services to children. Due to the loss of confidentiality, we do not and
will not conduct clinical
services through email.
- TESTING/ASSESSMENT: CAPS
staff clinicians use testing and assessment to assist in diagnosis, treatment
planning, and increasing the helpfulness of therapy. CAPS does not provide
assessment for ADD/ADHD and other Learning Disabilities but rather refers
individuals who wish to be tested for any of these conditions. Contact the
Assessment Coordinator or Director of CAPS for more information. To preserve
confidentiality, we do not and will not conduct testing services through email.
- PSYCHIATRIC EVALUATION: A psychiatric
consultant is available for persons who are actively engaged in counseling
with a CAPS clinician. This consultant can evaluate someone's need for
medication in conjunction with ongoing therapy. One must be working with
one of the CAPS clinicians in order to utilize the services of this consultant.
For more information, talk to your CAPS clinician.
- COMMUNITY EDUCATION: Information
is a powerful tool in dealing with the challenges and opportunities of
college life. The CAPS community education service provides opportunities
for members of the University community to participate in educational programs
with members of our staff on topics such as multiculturalism, diversity,
stress management, women's issues, promoting mental health, self-esteem,
etc. For more information, contact the Outreach Coordinator.
- PROFESSIONAL
TRAINING: Since its formation in 1982, CAPS has helped train graduate
students in clinical psychology,
social work, and counselor education.
A training appointment with CAPS provides the trainee with a broad exposure
to college mental health and counseling services, educational programs,
and consultations. Training appointments are half-time (20 hours per week)
for the academic year (fall and spring semesters). Prerequisites for placement
include basic courses in psychotherapy and counseling as well as approval
for field placement from the trainee's academic program. For more information,
contact the Training Coordinator.
Because email
is not a confidential form of communication, in order to protect confidentiality
and individual privacy, clinical services and responses to clinical inquiries--including
scheduling or cancelling appointments--will NOT be addressed through email.
