Kendo Equipment Information


Shinai

shinai
The shinai is the most common piece of equipment needed during the practice of kendo. It is the practice weapon that represents the sword. The shinai is also the first thing people who practice kendo purchase. As with a real sword, the shinai must be conditioned and maintained for regular practice. (Shinai Maintenance Page)

Uniform

kendo gi
The dark blue or purple gi is the standard for kendo practice. Sometimes a white gi can be used. Usually however, a white gi denotes a junior player.

hakama
The hakama is the standard pleated pants. Each pleat represents a characteristic of the samurai during fuedal Japan. The color of the hakama varies from the standard black to dark blue. For travel, the hakama is folded a special way to maintain the creases. (Folding a Hakama)

Armor

men
The men is the face mask in kendo. The men is also a valid target during practice or tournaments. The men consist of a face cage, shoulder pads, and padding all around the head. Tsuki protects the throat during practice. It is also a target during matches.

kote
Kote are gloves that protect the hands and wrist during practice.

do
Do is protection for the stomach.

tare
Tare is protection for the thighs.
