Time: one 80-minute session, Tuesday - Friday

Lab: Kimpel Hall 119J

Instructors: Journalism Graduate Students

Office: KH 127, Kimpel Hall

Office Phone : 575-3323

COURSE DESCRIPTION: The lab is a co-requisite to JOUR 1033, Fundamentals of Journalism. The course is a prerequisite to JOUR 2013, 2031L, 2032 and 4143.

The scores you receive in lab account for about 67 percent of your grade in JOUR 1033. You will not receive separate credit, nor a separate grade, for the lab.

REQUIRED MATERIALS: Always bring your AP Stylebook and Media Writer's Handbook to lab.  You must purchase a 128 MB (min.) "jump drive" or "thumb drive" on which to save your stories for revision.

Each weekly lab is worth a total of 30 points.

20 for the original, timed writing

10 for the revision

Save your papers!

The original lab exercise must be submitted with each revision. Forget the original and you lose 5 of your 10 points automatically. (Original means the exact paper you turned in during lab, with the instructor's marks. A reprinted paper will not do.) Your original papers are also required at the end of the semester for your portfolio.

Correct all mistakes in your revision.

On the original, your lab instructor will mark your mistakes but usually not correct them. If you don't understand why your paper was marked, ask your instructor or Professor Shurlds. DO NOT rewrite your paper to avoid having to correct a mistake in your paper.

Attendance at the labs is required.

An excused absence will allow you to make up the exercise and its revision. You may get an excused absence only by notifying the lab instructor before lab time.  A limited number of excused absences are allowed.

Makeups must be completed within a week of the missed lab.

The revision will be due a week after the original has been graded and returned. YOU must take responsibility for setting a time to make up the lab, at the convenience of your lab instructor.

Unexcused absences:

Missed writing labs cannot be made up. However, later in the semester you may cover an on-campus speaker and submit the story as a replacement for a missed lab assignment. Deadline is 4 p.m. on the day following the speech. No credit if you miss the deadline. Maximum of two replacement stories for missed labs. You must make arrangements with your lab instructor if you want to make up points this way.

The attendance policy for the lecture portion of JOUR 1033 is not the same as for the lab.

Policies for CLASS WEATHER POLICY, CAMPUS ACCESS and ACADEMIC HONESTY are the same as in the classroom portion of JOUR 1033.
