Black-crowned Night-Heron,Nycticorax nycticorax.
Three spring reports: April 15-18, 1983 and April 7, 1985, and April 25, 1987. There are
more than six fall reports, July 20 to October 26. There were no records for
this species in the western Arkansas Ozarks prior to 1981. In 1985 adults and
immatures (a total of at least three birds) were seen at the state fish hatchery
in Benton County between late August and late October. It now apprears that migrating
birds may be present annually at Centerton in late summer and early fall. One adult was
at Centerton on June 19, 1988, and two then lingered as late as December 4, 1987.
Yellow-crowned Night-Heron,Nyaticorax violaceus.
April 20 to October 3. Uncommon but regular summer resident. The birds are seen in
the summer, singly or in pairs, but never in large numbers. The presence of birds
around impoundments and along forested streams in summer suggests that nesting involves
isolated pairs. During late summer and fall as many as three adult birds have been seen
at the Lake Sequoyah dam site.
Glossy Ibis, Plegadis falcinellus.
A single bird was identified at Lake Frances near Siloam Springs August 26, 1986.
Written documentation was approved by the Arkansas Bird Records Committee.
