Northern Bobwhite,Colinus virginianus.
Common permanent resident in abandoned pastures, forest edge, and similar habitat.
Wild Turkey,Meleagris gallopavo.
Locally common permanent resident in extensively forested areas, especially Johnson and Newton Counties. The original
population was greatly reduced by overhunting and forest clearing. The small population remaining has been augmented
since the 1940s by releases of Wild Turkeys. Releases of wild birds trapped in southeastern Arkansas since the 1950's
(James, et al. 1983) have apparently been successful in restoring the species where suitable habitat remains.
