Short-billed Dowitcher, Limnodromus griseus.
July 12 to October 22 and May 10 to 17. Infrequently reported; apparently a very uncommon transient. Sight reports should include notations on plumage and calls. The 70 at Centerton on May 15, 1986, were identified by call and plumage.

Long-billed Dowitcher, Limnodromus scolopaceus.
August 20 to November 21 and March 26 to May 13. Fairly common transient in small numbers. A flock of 34, identified by call, was at the state fish hatchery in Benton County on October 23, 1984. Most dowitchers that are identified in the western Arkansas Ozarks are of this species.

Common Snipe, Gallinago gallinago.
July 17 to May 15+. Common transient and fairly common winter resident. Relatively few are seen until late September, after which the species is widespread in wet, grassy or marshy places in open country, and locally common at a few places like the state fish hatchery in Benton County. Severe weather characterized by prolonged freezes reduces feeding opportunities at midwinter. Small numbers are reported annually on the Fayetteville Christmas Bird Count, held in the second half of December. More than 100 were reported on this count in 1976. There have been two recent June records.
