Greater Roadrunner, Geococcyx californianus.
Uncommon permanent resident in small numbers that has been found in all seasons of the year along unpaved roads or in pastures where there is a mixture of forest and farm clearings or in lightly developed areas of towns. Severe winter weather in the late 1970s apparently decimated this species in the Ozarks (see, for example, Evans and Probasco 1982). Reports of more birds in the late 1980s suggests that the population is again reaching numbers typical of the mid - 1970s. Severe winter weather reduces the prey upon which roadrunners depend.
