Lewis' Woodpecker,Melanerpes lewis.
A single bird was observed repeatedly at Fayetteville June 30 to July 3, 1967. Dean Crooks
collected one in Adair County, Oklahoma, 20 miles from the Arkansas line, on April 3, 1943
(Baerg 1951).
Red-headed Woodpecker,Melanerpes erythrocephalus.
Common permanent resident. These birds migrate out of the Ozarks about every 3 or 4 years
(based upon totals from the Fayetteville Christmas Bird Count since 1971). During these
migration years the birds are very scarce from fall until the following spring. The required
habitat includes large, dead standing trees, usually in fairly open forest or forest edge.

Common permanent resident in forests throughout the region.
