Downy Woodpecker, Picoides pubescens.
Common, widespread permanent resident.

Hairy Woodpecker, Picoides villosus.
Fairly common permanent resident. Not as numerous as the preceding species, but of regular occurrence wherever there are large mature trees including some that have large dead limbs. Hairy woodpeckers are observed in towns as well as in forests, but nowhere are they numerous, and never as common, as Downy Woodpeckers.

Red-cockaded Woodpecker, Picoides borealis.
Howell (1911) reported the species as late as 1890 from a few sites in Van Buren and Cleburne Counties on the eastern edge of the region. Here as elsewhere, destruction of mature pine forests caused the disappearance of the species.

Pileated Woodpecker, Dryocopus pileatus.
Fairly common permanent resident in extensive mature forests, including those in lightly developed parts of towns.
