Golden-crowned Kinglet, Regulus satrapa.
October 7 to April 15. Fairly common migrant and winter resident. This species is sometimes quite common in the region, with totals from the Fayetteville Christmas Count occasionally in the 20s and 30s (1975: 34; 1982: 28). These atypical high counts were dwarfed, however, during the extremely mild winter of 1985-86, when 65 were counted at Fayetteville on January 4, 1986.

Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Regulus calendula.
September 17 to May 26. Common migrant and very uncommon winter resident. During migration this kinglet is common throughout the region, but most depart for the south by the time of hard winter cold, December through February. A few are usually reported on the Christmas Bird Count at Fayetteville; peak reports of even as many as 10 or 11 are unusual.

Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, Polioptila caerulea.
March 10 to October 7+. Common migrant and summer resident. Studies in the Arkansas Ozarks show that these gnatcatchers are among the most numerous of the region's breeding birds. Sometimes their calls seem literally to fill the stream bottom and hillside forests where they nest. They seem to thrive in the moist forests along the streams as well as the relatively dry cedar and oak-hickory forests on the hillsides. Nesting begins early, commonly by mid-April. Nests are constructed in both cedars and deciduous trees. Two reports of single birds in December suggest these birds occasionally linger past the normal period of fall migration.
