Chestnut-collared Longspur,Calcarius ornatus.
A single bird was observed and heard by Tom Haggerty at the University Farm in Fayetteville
on April 15, 1983. Documentation is on file with the Arkansas Audubon Society.
Lapland Longspur,Calcarius lapponicus.
November 13 to February 9. Uncommon but regular migrant and winter resident, at least
locally. Small flocks, usually of fewer than 10 birds, are found in open country with
very sparse vegetation. Many reports on file involve a few Laps among a flock of Horned
Larks. In recent years Laps have wintered with flocks of Horned Larks that visit the
school grounds at Southwest Junior High in Springdale. There are similar reports from
the airports at Fayetteville, Siloam Springs and Rogers, as well as the University Farm
north of the campus in Fayetteville.
Smith's Longspur,Calcarius pictus.
November 17 to February 28. Rare transient and winter visitor. In recent years a few
reports of 1-2 birds have come from Smith Field at Siloam Springs where the birds have
been observed in the Aristida species grasses near the terminal building. The February
28 record is from Howell (1911) who collected a specimen at Fayetteville.
