Purple Finch, Carpodacus purpureus.
October 8 to May 3+. Common migrant and common though somewhat irregular winter resident. Since 1971, the number found during the Fayetteville Christmas Bird Count (often held in the third week of December) has varied from lows of 7-14 to highs of 93 and 124. Smith (1935) reported a highly unusual case of nesting at Winslow, the only such record for Arkansas. It has been replaced by the House Finch in urban areas.

House Finch, Carpodacus mexicanus.
Common permanent resident. Originally found in the western states, it was introduced on Long Island, New York, and reached Northwest Arkansas in the 1990's.
