American Goldfinch,Carduelis tristis.
Common permanent resident. This "wild canary" is the symbol of the Northwest
Arkansas Audubon Society. It is a highly characteristic resident of shrubby,
abandoned fields in the region and is a regular visitor to home bird feeders
in winter.
Lesser Goldfinch,Carduelis psaltria.
A single bird of the green-backed form first appeared at a home feeder in the
summer of 1983 near Gravette, often being associated with American Goldfinches.
It remained at this locale for several years thereafter.
Pine Siskin,Carduelis pinus.
October 17 to May 26. Fairly common transient, regular winter resident locally
in small numbers. A few visit feeders in the region every winter, but flocks
are observed primarily during migration. More than 60 were harvesting ripe
dandelion seeds at Fayetteville on April 29, 1986. Siskins often associate
with goldfinches.
