What is Theta Tau?
Theta Tau is a National, Professional, Engineering Fraternity.
Theta Tau - The Greek Letters Q and T
National - We have chapters at ABET accredited schools all over the United States.
Professional - Although we do hold social events, our focus is professional development. First, we try to make you a better Engineer and then we have a party.
Engineering - Theta Tau membership is limited only to those currently in an accredited engineering program, leading to an engineering degree.
Fraternity - As was mentioned earlier it is called a fraternity but it does admit women. Theta Tau is a fraternity as opposed to an engineering society because membership is for life.

What is the purpose of Theta Tau?
The purpose of Theta Tau is to develop and maintain a high standard of professional interest among its members and to unite them in a strong bond of fraternal fellowship.

What is the motto of Theta Tau?
"Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might..." - Ecclesiastes 9:10

Is Theta Tau an Honor Society?
No, although we strongly encourage academic achievement, we are not an honor society. Even though have the highest average GPA (3.3) of any fraternity on campus, the minimum required cumulative GPA for being initiated into Theta Tau is 2.0.

How do I join?
Like other fraternal organizations, membership in Theta Tau will come only after you have proven that you will be a valuable member of the organization. There are three steps to joining: rushing, pledging, and initiation.

What is Rushing?
Rush, a once per semester event, is a two week period where interested students can attend Theta Tau-sponsored events to meet the brothers and get more information about the fraternity. When a student goes to one of these functions it's said that they are rushing the house. This is an obligation-free, "trial period" for any student interested in becoming a part of Theta Tau. Rush functions benefit students and members alike, giving both an opportunity to know more about the other. Please take advantage of Rush, enjoy the food and drink, and have a blast at the Rush party!

What is Pledging?
Following Rush, the student decides whether he/she would like to be a part of Theta Tau, upon which he/she is extended a bid by the fraternity. The pledging semester is essentially a committment by the "pledge" to strive to become a Theta Tau by completing the tasks set before him. This period of time also gives the brothers a chance to develop friendships with the pledges and to get an assessment of their ability to contribute to the fraternity at large.

At the end of the pledging period, the pledges are evaluated in terms of the accomplished tasks, and after an anonymous membership vote a pledge is given the choice to accept membership into Theta Tau. The various tasks required during the pledging semester will be disclosed duly during the semester.

Who is eligible to join?
Any engineering student is eligible to join Theta Tau, and usually the highest qualification is having good character. However, we do have a few particular qualifications that must be met by the time of initiation (not the start of pledging).
  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must be enrolled in a program leading to an Engineering degree.
  • (Once you are a member of Theta Tau, you are a member for life, even if you should switch majors at some future date.)
  • Attend weekly chapter meetings.
  • Not be members of a competing engineering fraternity.
  • (Alpha Chi Sigma and Phi Sigma Rho are the only ones at Arkansas)
  • Must not be a first semester freshman or have one quarter left until graduation.
  • Have agreed to and met the financial obligations outlined below.
  • Have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0

Are Computer Science / Computer Information Systems / Architecture majors allowed to join?
A Computer Science student who is in a B.S. program is eligible to join while a student who is in a B.A. program in Computer Science is not. Computer Information Systems and Architecture students are also not eligible to join Theta Tau at this time.

Can a Graduate Student in Engineering join?
Yes, graduate engineering students are allowed to join Theta Tau and are encouraged to do so. However, please keep in mind that everybody goes through pledging, which can take up a lot of time.

Can I be a member of Theta Tau and another fraternity?
Because Theta Tau is a professional fraternity any member of a social fraternity (Eg. Kappa Sigma, Phi Kappa Alpha, etc.) is eligible to join. However, members of certain other professional fraternities or sororities are ineligible. Eg. Alpha Chi Sigma, Phi Sigma Rho, Scarab, etc. Yet, there are many exceptions to this, so please contact us to find out if you are eligible to join.

How much time does Theta Tau require from me?
During the pledging semester, each pledge is expected to put in at least 3-4 hours per week for meetings, work details, etc. and 2 hours a week for study hall. Of course, in any given week these hours would vary. Theta Tau, however, is an "investment fraternity," meaning that what you get out of it is directly proportional to what you invest in it. If you don't show up for meetings, don't attend events (parties, games, etc.), you will get very little out of it. However, members who spend a lot of time with Theta Tau find that they get plenty - friendship, leadership experience, connections, and more.

How do you pronounce "Theta Tau"?
Although your professors and classmates might say "Theta Tau," rhyming the "Tau" with "cow" or "now," it is meant to be pronounced so that it rhymes with "law." Expect tons of humiliation for pronouncing this incorrectly.=)
