arkansas
writers in the schools

Welcome to Arkansas W.I.T.S.
For more than 30 years, we’ve sent writers from the University of Arkansas Graduate Programs in Creative Writing and Translation to schools throughout Arkansas. During each two-day visit, our writers read poetry, discuss effective writing (concrete language, details, metaphors, specific imagery, use of the five senses, etc.) and lead students through exercises that help them write their own poetry. Some of the students’ poems are later published in the WITS annual anthology. Copies of the anthology are provided free of charge to all participating schools as well as to the families of published students.

Studies have shown that programs such as WITS boost student engagement in the classroom. Our focus on language and reading also helps in the Language Arts area of the curriculum. We’ve found that the nature of our activities boosts self-esteem and motivation, especially in those students who may be at the highest risk for educational failure. Our hope is that more Arkansas students will be inspired to pursue the important work of reading and writing, and, as they meet representatives of the state's flagship university, consider attending the University of Arkansas in the future.

“The kids thoroughly enjoyed their experience with the writers. Normally, getting kids to write anything creative, especially poetry, is very difficult, but the writers made the experience fun and exciting for them. They did a great job! The writers’ positive energy and encouraging instruction kept my students involved, entertained, and contributed to the production of great pieces of writing.” — a teacher at Parker’s Chapel High School
