The Veil: Visible & Invisible Spaces, which will open on September 10, is a traveling exhibition which examines many of the same themes, although here “the veil” is not limited to the Islamic head covering, but includes interpretations of bridal veils, the Roman Catholic nun’s habit and other manifestations of veiling in various cultures. The Veil: Visible & Invisible Spaces features the work of twenty-nine artists from around the world, including videographers, filmmakers and new media artists, as well as painters, sculptors and installation artists.
A gallery talk by the exhibition curator, Jennifer Heath of Boulder, Colorado,
will take place on September 16 at 4 p.m. in the Fine Arts Center Gallery,
followed by a reception and book signing at 5:00 pm.
Heath is the editor
of The Veil: Women Writers on Its History, Lore, and
Politics (University
of California Press), a collection of 21 essays, including a contribution
by local author and UA faculty member Dr. Mohja Kahf. Dr. Kahf will present
readings in the gallery on Wednesday, October 15, at 5 p.m., also in
conjunction with this exhibition. The Veil continues through October
24.
Additional programming related to this theme will include a lecture by art educator Dr. Themina Kader, “Images & Identity: Muslim Women’s World View,” which will be presented in Giffels Auditorium in Old Main on Thursday, October 9 at 8 p.m. Dr. Kader will also present a workshop for teachers on the art of henna painting on October 10 - 11.
