Pick up the activity booklet from the Junior Ranger display located beside the paved path as you start down to the animal habitat area. Each child who returns a completed booklet to the Entrance gate before departing will receive a Grandfather Mountain Junior Ranger button.
The Split Rock & Sphinx Rock - 1-billion-year-old rocks located beside the summit road about 3/4 mile up the Mountain before the Nature Museum.
The Woods Walk - Circumscribing the attraction's picnic area on the lower slopes of the mountain, leisurely 4/10-mile loop through mature Appalachian forest.
The Bridge Trail - Beginning at Hiker Parking Area, Four-tenths of a mile in length, the trail switchbacks up the mountain, traveling under the Swinging Bridge before ending at the Visitor Center. There are some massive outcroppings of rock on this trail. Allow 20 minutes each way.
The Black Rock Nature Trail - begins at the Hiker Parking Area and slopes out gradually to a wide angle view of the Swinging Bridge, MacRae and Attic Window Peaks, as well as the Blue Ridge Parkway and Grandmother Mountain to the southwest. The trail runs out a mile through northern hardwood and spruce forests. An easily accessed self-guided nature trail, pick up a guide at the trailhead - Allow 1 hour round trip.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park

  • Cades Cove - 11-mile loop - Within Cades Cove is Cable Mill, one of the largest group of restored structures on the Tennessee side of the park. Also Elijah Oliver Place - log structure with a stream flowing through it. Davis House - log building made with rare chestnut wood. Cataloochee Valley is located on the North Carolina side of the Park and was the largest and most prosperous pioneer settlement, surrounded by 6,000-foot mountains.
  • Newfound Gap Road. park's most scenic drive stretches over the Smokies' crest, connecting Gatlinburg, TN and Cherokee, NC. From the Newfound Gap Parking Area, some of the best high-mountain vistas in the park. Further ahead take Clingmans Dome Road along the ridge. From the parking area, hike the half-mile trail to the observation tower -- the highest point in the national park -- for a 360-degree view of the peaks.
