The Sabine National Wildlife Refuge is the place to go to see alligators. We got there too late for the visitors' center, but you can walk into the swamp until dark. They have a sidewalk that stretches way off into the swamp. There's nothing on the sides of the sidewalk to separate you from the alligators, but they don't seem to mind if you poke them with a stick. Alligators seem to be pretty docile. The baby ones are fiesty, but they just want to get away from you. They will hiss. The alligator above and below was full grown; it was maybe 8 feet long. I'm sure we would have seen many more alligators if we hadn't been there in the off-season.

The sidewalk through the swamp is called the Wetland Walkway and it's 1 1/5 miles long.

Even without the alligators, the walk through the swamp is beautiful.
Below is another baby alligator.
