La Brea Tar Pits
The Tar Pits are cool! A huge pool of tar right in the middle of the city, tar bubbling up out of the ground. The fake animals in the tar put the right perspective on things. That's Wilshire Blvd. in the background (below).

La Brea Tar Pits - mammoths in the tar

In the La Brea Tar Pits Museum (right next to the tar), there are bones of some of the animals found in the tar, mostly bones of dire wolves (above, left). There are also mammoths (above right and a replica below right), saber-toothed cats (below left), American lions, lots of birds, and a woman found in the tar. They don't have the actual woman in there, but a hologram of her. BTW, that's Terry (on right) and his brother, Jimmy, looking at the mammoth.

There's a big fence around the tar so you don't fall in, but the tar will bubble up out of the ground outside the fence in tiny places. I gathered a little piece of tar when I was there as a souvenir, stuck it in a cigarette pack. Can't find it now... The museum looks a lot nicer than when we were there; they have a laboratory that you can observe now according to their web site.
