How Not To Get Bitten

Safety Around Animals for Kids

One: Don't go up to dogs you don't know unless the owner says it's okay!!! Not all dogs are friendly, some may BITE!

Two: If an adult says it's okay to pet a dog:

Three: Don't go up to a dog or try to pet one that growls at you, and if it moves away, don't chase after it.

Four: Don't play rough with any dog.

Five: Don't try to pet a dog through a fence, car window, or cage.

Six: Don't try to take a toy or food away from a dog.

Seven: Don't frighten or startle a dog, especially when it's sleeping.

Eight: Don't try to punish a dog, never hit at one.

If a dog that you do not know comes up to you . . .
Don't run or yell. Don't stare right at him, watch him out of the corner of your eye. Stand STILL, cross your hands in front of your chest. Walk away SLOWLY backwards.
If a dog chases you . . .
Don't scream. Cross your hands in front of your chest. Walk away slowly backwards.
If you are on your bike and a dog chases you . . .
Stop, get off your bike, put your bike between you and the dog, and do the steps above.
Sometimes cats bite, too, and scratch . . .
So if you see a cat that you do not know, the safest thing to do is to LEAVE IT ALONE.

Teaching safety around animals is part of the Shelter's education program. Information about safety around animals, as well as other subjects, is also available in the Betty Lighton Education Room at the Shelter.
