Crop, Soil, and Environmental Sciences

Department web site: http://cses.uark.edu

The Department of Crop, Soil, and Environmental Sciences' research program has consistently produced excellent, innovative, basic and applied technology in such diverse areas as plant breeding and genetics, weed science, crop physiology, soils, and environmental science. With the recent addition of two new faculty positions, research in the areas of plant tissue culture and plant genomics will be an exciting addition to our comprehensive research program.

Our primary research goal is to investigate biological, chemical, physical, and social sciences relative to agriculture and environmental issues, to strengthen team approaches in the development of agricultural systems that are economically viable, socially sound, and environmentally acceptable. Although our faculty work primarily with agricultural interests in providing food and fiber, we also work on problems affecting communities and environmental concerns.

In our efforts to maintain and develop state-of-the-art research knowledge in crop, soil, and environmental sciences, we conduct research on physiological and genetic solutions that influence plant and crop production at our on-campus lab facilities, our facilities at the Altheimer Laboratory, and at our research and extension centers throughout the state. We continue to expand our research efforts to evaluate Arkansas' soils and water and to provide basic knowledge in chemistry, physics, microbiology, genesis, mineralogy and fertility of soils. We conduct multidisciplinary crop management research. We cooperate with other disciplines within the University, other universities, industry, and governmental agencies to address environmental issues involving soil and water resources.

Research endeavors have been instrumental in allowing Arkansas farmers to remain competitive in the United States and abroad while preserving the environment. Our faculty is committed to continuing this tradition of producing innovative programs and rapidly transferring new technology from these programs to our clientele.

Locally, the faculty and students participate in meetings and workshops to provide research information to a wide range of clientele. Programs range from K-12 efforts to hosting international visitors. One of our faculty members is working with a local elementary school, providing students hands-on experience by performing tasks such as collecting rain and temperature data, measuring plant height and yield, and generally increasing their knowledge about plant and soil science. Faculty are well represented in refereed journals such as the Crop Science, Soil Science Society of America Journal, Journal of Environmental Quality, and Plant and Soil Science to name a few. Faculty members frequently serve on competitive review panels, editorial boards of scientific journals, and committees of scientific and professional organizations. Many faculty are elected chairs and presidents of national professional scientific societies and organizations.

Field research is conducted at Research and Extension Centers and Branch Experiment Stations throughout the state.
