The Department of Educational Leadership, Counseling, and Foundations offers graduate-level courses in five distinctive academic and degree programs. Master's, specialist, and doctoral degrees may be obtained in counselor education, educational administration, and higher education. A master's degree may be obtained in educational technology. Educational foundations offers courses in research and statistics for all programs. Undergraduate courses are offered by counselor education, educational foundati ons, and educational technology.

Counselor Education (CNED)

Courses: Counselor Education (CNED)

• 2013 Paraprofessional Counseling and Leadership Development Study and application of interpersonal and leadership skills. Conceptualization, observation and analysis of communications. Practice in developing direct and effective communications, particularly in peer counseling and leadership situations. Prerequisites: sophomore standing and consent of the instructor.

• 3053 The Helping Relationship (I, II) An examination of school and community resources available to help students in distress. Development of an understanding of the helping relationship, including problem recognition and referral to appropriate resources. Particularly appropriate for students working as paraprofessional helpers, such as Residence Hall Staff, Orientation Counselors, or Study Skills Leaders. Prerequisite: PSYC 2003.

• 4003 Classroom Human Relations Skills A study of interpersonal skills important to improving teacher-student relationships and achievement in classrooms. Human communication systems related to motivation, achievement, and educator-student relationships are studied. The attainment of effective human relations skills are emphasized.

  Graduate standing is prerequisite to the following courses:

• 5203 Introduction to Counseling (I, II, S) A study of the counseling profession applicable to a variety of human service settings. Introduction to basic philosophical and psychological foundations of counseling as well as specific traits and s kills of counselors.

• 5213 Lifestyle & Career Development Theories of career development and counseling, including use of occupational information sources and career assessment tools and techniques.

• 5303 Individual Appraisal (I, S) Analysis of concepts, methods, and procedures utilized in individual appraisal.

• 5313 Program Organization and Information Management (S) Study of client information needs and strategies for effective management of counseling services.

• 5323 Counseling Theory (II, S) Introductory survey and critical analysis of major alternative theoretical perspectives in counseling.

• 5332 Basic Counseling Techniques Introduction to basic counseling techniques and skills common to multiple theoretical perspectives.

• 5343P Counseling Practicum (I, II, S) Supervised counseling practice. Prerequisite: CNED 5332 and 5323.

• 5353 Health Counseling A review of the role and function of the health counselor including a focus on problem-solving approaches for coping with daily problems of living, decision making, and life style planning. (Same as HLSC 5353.)

• 5363 Group Dynamics Therapeutic and other theoretical information is presented regarding group process and the counselor's role in that process. An experiential group experience is required.

• 5372 Ethical and Legal Issues in Counseling (I, S) Review of ethical and legal standards governing professional counselor training, research, and counseling practice; including client rights; confidentiality; the client-counselor relationship; and counseling research, training, and supervision. Prerequisite: CNED 5203 or consent.

• 5382 Crisis Intervention Counseling Analysis and application of short-term counseling intervention strategies in crisis situations, with special attention to incidents involving rape, physical or emotional abuse, divorce, suicidal depression, grief, marital or family instability, and violent conflict. Prerequisite: CNED 5332.

• 5403 Case Management and the Counseling Program (II, S) Procedures in case management utilizing both clinical and interview data in assisting children, adolescents, and adults in educational, vocational, personal, and social planning. Prerequ isite: CNED 5303.

• 5413 Individual Measurement in Guidance (II, S) Rationale, administration and interpretation of tests and measurements of the individual student. Prerequisite: CNED 5303.

• 5513 Counseling and Human Diversity (II, S) Examination of human and cultural diversity, emphasizing issues of race, class, and socioeconomic status, and how they impact our clients as individuals and as family and society members.

• 560V Workshop

• 574V Counseling Internship (I, II) A 300-clock-hour field placement in an approved setting. Students in the master's degree program must enroll for 3 credit hours in two semesters of field placement, for a total of 6 credit hours. Prerequisites: CNED 5323, 5332, 5343, 5363, 5372, 6003.

• 599V Seminar (I, II, S)

• 6003 Counseling and Addictions A study of behavioral and substance additions, including an overview of differential treatment. Prerequisite: CNED 5323 and 5333, or consent.

• 6013 Advanced Counseling Theory and Methods (I, S) Critical analysis of major theoretical perspectives in counseling, including both group and individual counseling strategies for dealing with affective, cognitive, and behavioral dysfunction.< p>
• 6023 Theories of Family Therapy (I) A comprehensive exploration of the current theories and techniques of family therapy.

• 6033 Advanced Group Theory and Practice (II) Comparative study of theories and processes of group counseling. Includes supervised experience in group facilitation with video recording and playback. Prerequisite: CNED 5363 or equivalent and consent.

• 6043 Supervision of Counselors (I) Analysis, assessment, and practical application of counselor supervision techniques in treatment and training programs. Prerequisites: CNED 6743 and consent.

• 605V Independent Study (I, II, S)

• 6062 Counseling and Sexuality Analysis of theory and practice in issues related to sexual dysphoria, sexuality, and sexual problems. Prerequisite: CNED 574V or consent.

• 6072 Research in Counseling Review and analysis of research in counseling.

• 6083 Consultation Theory and Practice Strategies, practical application, and techniques for effective consultation with parents, teachers, and community agencies.

• 6093 Counseling Children Introduction to counseling children including the process, theories, techniques. and materials applicable to children in a pluralistic society. Prerequisite: CNED 5323, 5332, 5343.

• 6203 Counseling Adolescents Introduction to counseling adolescents including the process, theories, techniques. and materials applicable to children in a pluralistic society. Prerequisite: CNED 5323, 5332, 5343.

• 6343 Counseling and Cultural Context Study of the effects of culture on case analysis and implications for treatment.

• 6413 Advanced Individual Measurement To provide advanced knowledge and experience with those psychoeducational instruments and procedures used in conducting school related assessment. Prerequisites: CNED 5303, 5413, or equivalent.

• 6523 Gender Issues in Counseling and Human Development A study of gender and sex role issues pertinent to the counseling profession, and their effect on the development of children, adults, and young and older adults. Students utilize Gender Fair Guidelines for counseling as presented by the American Counseling Association. Prerequisite: CNED 5203, or consent.

• 674V Internship (On demand) Supervised field placement consent required.

• 680V Educational Specialist Project (1-6) An original project, research paper, or report required of all Ed.S. degree candidates. Prerequisite: admission to Ed.S. program and consent.

• 699V Seminar Prerequisite: advanced graduate standing and consent.

• 700V Doctoral Dissertation (I, II, S) Prerequisite: candidacy or consent of student's advisory committee.
