Thermal Environment of Poultry: A close look at the various temperature zones explains in part why homeostasis is most effective within a certain temperature range (thermoneutral zone). As temperatures decrease, an animal may be able to stay warm by eating more, but the increased feed intake is used for warmth and not growth. As temperatures increase, an animal may be able to stay cool for a while, but heat loss mechanisms actually produce heat and may eventually lead to the death of the animal.
