Archeology Career Information

What DO archaeologists do in the 21st century? What kinds of jobs and careers ARE they working at? This special issue of the SAA Archaeological Record, provided free of charge by the Society for American Archaeology, provides 12 personal accounts of careers in archaeology that prove that archaeology is about MUCH more than digging. This issue can be accessed for free through this link: http://goo.gl/B0z2f .

Archeological Information on Arkansas Encyclopedia

The Arkansas Encyclopedia of History & Culture offers a number of entries on Native Americans and archeology in Arkansas, many written by Arkansas Archeological Survey staff. Search for topics on the Encyclopedia web site, or see a selected list on our Education Links page.

SAA Launches Web Site for the Public

The Society for American Archaeology, Public Education Committee, has launched a new web site called “Archaeology for the Public.” The site is rich with resources for learning about archaeology. There are links to archaeological sites to visit, sources for volunteering on a dig, Archaeology Months, lesson plans and workshops for teachers, information on books and movies, FAQs, artifact of the month, and much more. Check it out!

Arkansas Curriculum Conference

The Arkansas Curriculum Conference, a huge joint conference for teachers covering science, social studies, math, and languages, is held each November. The Conference is filled with several days of workshops and sessions to benefit teachers, as well as a large exhibit hall featuring teaching products, exhibits, and free materials. The Conference is sponsored by the ACSS, ACTELA, ACTM, and ASTA. The Arkansas Archeological Survey regularly attends the Conference, setting up in the exhibit hall to hand out free resource materials on Arkansas archaeology and Native Americans, and providing one or more sessions about the same topics. For additional information, please visit http://users.aristotle.net/~asta/meet.htm.

University Days

The University of Arkansas has annually hosted University Day, a program designed to stimulate the science, math, and technology curricula of northwest Arkansas schools. The program was such a success that in 2005 it expanded to two days. During University Days, teachers and students have the opportunity to participate in math, science, and technology laboratory and hands-on activities suitable for use in their own classrooms. The first day is for 4-6 grade students, and the second day for 7-12 grade students. The days are free of charge to all K-12 public, private, and home school teachers and students. Over 30 different classes are offered; subjects include astronomy, dinosaurs and fossils, earth sciences, microscopes, GIS, and archaeology. For more information, see the following www.uark.edu/~k12info/student/UDAY/index.html.
