Mississippian Culture Effigy Vessels from Eastern Arkansas
AD 1200-1600

This Web page illustrates three examples of many hundreds of prehistoric Mississippian culture effigy vessels that have been excavated from ancient village sites in eastern Arkansas. Effigy vessels are also known from adjoining regions of neighboring states. They variously depict humans, naturalistic animals, and mythological beings in earthenware. Though they collectively exhibit a generally shared artistic tradition, they also reflect a range of stylistic diversity within that tradition.

The prehistoric Mississippian archaeological culture encompasses the ancestors of the Southeastern and Midwestern Native American peoples of history and present-day America.
