South Central Historical Archeology Conference

- SCHAC 10: September 26-28, 2008 -

Winthrop Rockefeller Institute, Morrilton, Arkansas

The 10th more or less annual South Central Historical Archeology Conference will be held 26-28 September, 2008, at the Teaching Barn at the Winthrop Rockefeller Institute, atop Petit Jean Mountain. The Rockefeller Institute is about 30 minutes from I40 Exit 108 at Morrilton, Arkansas and about 1.5 hours west of Little Rock.  Or, one can cruise through the Ouachitas for awhile and come up from the south via Petit Jean on US Hwy 7 or Oppelo on US Hwy 9.

Skip Stewart-Abernathy is program chair and local arrangements chair and host, so if questions contact him at  lstewart@cswnet.com or sstewartabernathy@uawri.org. Or call at 501 727-6250 or 479 264-8149.

** SCHAC 10 PROGRAM & ABSTRACTS are now posted!

SCHAC 10 program

The “formal” (as if) program will begin Friday afternoon the 26th , with a distracting tour of  prehistoric spectacular rock art in Petit Jean State Park 10 minutes from said Barn. Tour will be from 1230-230pm, starting and returning to the Barn.  Presentations will begin with Skip at 230pm. Friday night is BYOB at the Tack Room at WRI.

Saturday will be all day for fascinating essays, field reports, descriptive analyses, wild speculations, and sober reflections, not to mention clever low budget and higher budget posters.  Then a gourmet banquet (yes, really), followed by more BYOB revelries back at the Tack Room.  Did I mention the River  Rock Grill at WRI is “ wet”? And it’s the only venue of its kind on the Mountain.

The traditional Sunday morning workshop will be on integrating historical archy, oral history, and GIS, held in conjunction with the “Sense of Place” exhibit, guest curated by Mary Brennan, at the Arkansas Tech University Museum about 45 minutes away in nearby Russellville.  And then you are free to go, unless you want to stay for a Series of Discovery lecture by historian and archivist Tom Dillard, “Going Beyond the Arkansas Traveler: Some Thoughts on Arkansas Transportation History” at the Museum at 230pm.

After nine gatherings so far, we’re still not sure what “South Central” really means, so show up from wherever and help us define the region. And bring $5 for registration.

SCHAC 10 Lodging and Meals

Information on WRI lodging and meal packages (the only other place to stay or eat on the Mountain is the State Park Lodge) is now online at www.uawri.org or call 501 727-5435.

And don’t forget, complete programs are published on the SCHAC web site at http://www.uark.edu/campus-resources/archinfo/schacpapers.html , and so are submitted papers, with neither the messiness of editing nor the awkwardness of peer review.  Not so great for promotions or tenure but you get your results out there on the intertubes.
