IPDA National Tournament

University of Arkansas debaters from the Arkansas Union Society made a strong showing in the National Tournament sponsored by the International Public Debate Association (IPDA). Arkansas finished Second in the Novice Sweepstakes and Eighth in the Open Division Sweepstakes based on rounds won by team members during the preliminary rounds of the national tournament. More than 130 debate programs are members of the IPDA.

Individual members receiving trophies during the tournament included Bill Horton who reached the double octo round, Robin Miller and Brent Conrad who reached octos, Courtney Campbell who reached the Quarter-Finals, and Leah Potts who reached the Semi-Final Round. Courtney Campbell also received the trophy for Fifth Place in Novice Debate Speaking.

Arkansas also received several awards from the IPDA in recognition of outstanding competition during the academic year. The Arkansas Union Society received the 9th Place trophy in the Churchill Award competition for best program season record and the 2nd Place trophy in the Martin Luther King Award competition for top novice program record. In addition, Bill Horton won the 5th Place Trophy in the Susan B. Anthony Award competition for outstanding novice debater.
