Arkansas Union Society members were among 19 schools from five states participating in the Red River Swing Debate Tournament at Shreveport, hosted by Louisiana State University-Shreveport and the University of Texas-Tyler on February 4-6, 2000. The Arkansas Union Society placed 4th in the Debate Sweepstakes competition.

Bill Horton, Union Society President, said, "We are extremely pleased with the performance of our teams. Every member attending contributed to our success, whether serving as a judge, helping coach fellow students, or actively competing in the debate and speaking events. It was our best overall showing of the year, bring home seven trophies for the University of Arkansas."

In the Open Division of the Public Debate competition, with 31 entries, Horton reached the finals and received the Second Place trophy on a 2-1 decision of the judges. Leah Potts also reached the quarter-finals and received an additional trophy for Fifth Best Debater on speaking points.

Robin Miller reached the semi-final round in the Novice Division of Public Debate, finishing third in speaker points, and Kristin Morgan received the trophy for Fifth Best Debater among the 29 entries. Morgan also reached the final round in Persuasive Speaking and received the Sixth Place Trophy.
