GROWTH HABIT and RATE:
Spreading, dense, rounded shrub, arching habit, to 2.5 m where top hardy. Fast growing. Killed to the ground in Zone 5, recovers quickly.

ADAPTABILITY:
Full sun to half shade, acidic soils.

FUNCTIONS:
Border, massing, foundation, screen (where not winter-killed).

PROBLEMS AND MAINTENANCE:
Need to prune to remove winter-killed growth.

NATIVE RANGE:
Hybrid: Abelia chinensis x A. uniflora

USEFUL RANGE (USDA Zones):
Zones 5-9

SUBSPECIES, VARIETIES, CULTIVARS:
'Frances Mason'- yellow color on new leaves, yellow variegation.
'Sherwood'- smaller, denser selection.
'Edward Goucher'- a hybrid between A. x grandiflora X A. schumannii, pink-flowered, less hardy.
'Sunrise'- white/yellow vareigated foliage.
'Rose Creek'- a selection by Dirr, from open-pollinated seed collected from A. chinensis. Compact habit.
