GROWTH HABIT, RATE:
A rounded, upright shrub, tending to spread laterally, dense, twiggy and thorny.
Medium growth rate.
ADAPTABILITY:
Performs best in full sun, well-drained soils, will tolerate drought. Long-lived
in the landscape and popular for that reason.
FUNCTIONS:
Shrub border, specimen, massing.
PROBLEMS AND MAINTENANCE:
Aphids disfigure new growth. Late frosts and freezes ruin floral display in
most years. Occasional fire blight and scab. Leaf spot can partially defoliate
plant in most years, so looks ratty at end of season.
NATIVE RANGE:
Japan
USEFUL RANGE (USDA Zones):
Zones 4-8
SUBSPECIES, VARIETIES, CULTIVARS:
Many different cultivars are available, see Dirr.
