GROWTH HABIT, RATE:
Upright and spreading to 15 feet, except smaller in cultivars. Medium rate, branches can arch to the ground.

ADAPTABILITY:
Full sun to half shade. Adaptable to soil extremes, also tolerates wet soils.

FUNCTIONS:
Border, specimen, screen.

PROBLEMS AND MAINTENANCE:
Aphids, especially on some cultivars. Invasive in the upper Midwest

SUBSPECIES, VARIETIES, CULTIVARS:
'Compactum'- below 5 feet in height; 'Roseum'- all sterile flowers, susceptible to aphids; 'Xanthocarpum'- yellow fruits. V. trilobum is the American Cranberrybush, bears edible fruit, hardier, better fall color.
