Flowers: Monoecious, male catkins are visible in winter and are a good identification clue. Female flowers emerge in early spring.

Foliage: Medium to dark green, yellow fall color.

Fruit: Inflated, membraneous infructescence, mid-summer to autumn. Covered in irritating hairs.

Trunk, Branching, Twigs: Bark exfoliates in narrow strips.

Location: On the Old Main mall, near Arkansas ave., where Arkansas intersects with Lafayette street.
