GROWTH HABIT, RATE:
Broad pyramidal, tightly branched, final shape and size depends on cultivar.
Very dense, casts deep shade.
ADAPTABILITY:
Tolerates drought, adaptable to soil. Full sun.
FUNCTIONS:
Small shade, street or patio tree.
PROBLEMS AND MAINTENANCE:
Fire blight is a problem on some cultivars. Narrow branch angles, especially
in 'Bradford' mean the plant is susceptible to ice storm damage. This plant
is overused in the landscape. Popular bird roost in the fall, thus very messy
underneath. Is spreading from cultivation in some areas.
NATIVE RANGE:
China
USEFUL RANGE (USDA Zones):
Zones 5-9
SUBSPECIES, VARIETIES, CULTIVARS:
'Redspire'- oval form, better branching than 'Bradford;' 'Chanticleer'- narrowly
pyramidal, fall color is early. Many other cultivars given in Dirr.
