Greek Comedy Honors Colloquium, 2004

Illustration: Fikellura style amphora, from southern Ionia, perhaps Miletus. 550-540 BCE. Louvre, Paris. (Fikellura is a site on the isle of Rhodes) From the "Group of the Running Man." This monstrous being is without parallel in Greek ceramics, and sometimes has been interpreted as one of Odysseus' companions, whom Circe has transformed into a part-man, part hare creature. However, in other images from this group, the man-hare wears a pair of drawers, and it is possible that the head represented above could be a mask. In this case what is it? Perhaps a metaphor of speedy running, or a some sort of ritual?

Local Production of Aristophanes' Lysistrata, April 23, 24, 25, 30, May 1, 2.
