GREEK 1003: ELEMENTARY CLASSICAL GREEK

Fall Semester, 2009

Image: Chimaera. 350-330 BCE. Silver Aeginetic stater from Sicyon (north Peloponnese, ten miles northwest of Corinth). Obverse of coin, showing the Chimera, left. Above, a wreath; below, SE = abbreviation of Sicyon. The Chimaera was a fire-breathing monster which dwelt in Lycia and was slain by Bellerophon, though Hesiod says it was the offspring of the Lion of Nemea and the Hydra of Lerna, two districts adjoining the territory of Sicyon.
