Decoration Description:
Interior: seated youth writing on a tablet. The youth sits on a low stool facing right. He is shown in profile and is dressed in a himation which leaves his right arm and shoulder uncovered. A faded wreath rests on his head. The young man gingerly holds a stylus which he is using to write on the folding tablet on his lap. To his right is part of a chest which may be for storing scrolls. There are nonsense inscriptions, one of them retrograde, in the field around him.
Inscriptions: A nonsense inscription in the field around the youth is composed of unrecognizable characters.
Collection History: The kylix was excavated/collected by A.L. Frothingham under the auspices of the American Exploration Society IN 1896-1897 and became part of the University Museum's collection in 1897. Funding for the museum's contribution to the excavation came from John Wanamaker.
Condition: The kylix has been reconstructed from numerous pieces. The reserved surface is worn, scraped, and chipped. Damage is more severe at the fractures.
