Theodicy

Theodicy: an explanation of why there is evil in the world in spite of there being an all good, all powerful, all knowing God. (Cf. P 622a)

Free Will Theodicy:

  1. Necessarily, if persons have free will, then there will be evil.
  2. Therefore, God cannot make a world free of evil in which persons have free will.
  3. The value of the free will in the world is greater than the disvalue of evil (e.g. pain and suffering) in the world.
  4. Therefore, God was right to allow there to be evil in the world (in order that persons might have free will).
