Philosophical Paper Assignment 1

Tentative

Write a philosophical paper on one of the following arguments:

  1. Plato's argument (Republic X (selection)) in the final book of Republic that the soul is immortal
  2. Thomas Aquinas's argument in Summa Theologica Prima Secunda, question 3, article 8 that perfect and final happiness for man "consists in the vision of the divine essence." (The "I answer that" section is where Aquinas offers his view.) [More of the context can be seen at: What is Happiness?.]
  3. John Stuart Mill's argument in On Nature against the view that there is moral merit or value in "following, imitating, or obeying Nature"
  4. "Weirob"'s critique of "Miller"'s person-stage account of the possibility of survival of death in John Perry's A Dialogue on Personal Identity and Immortality (in Philosophical Inquiry pp.321-334; see especially pp.325f)
  5. Arthur Danto's argument (in section IV of "The Artistic Enfranchisment of Real Objects: The Artworld") that "Strictly speaking, a black square by Reinhardt is artistically as rich as Titian's Sacred and Profane Love." (Philosophical Inquiry p.851b)

Here are some guidelines:
