The American Association of University Professors exists to maintain and advance the ideals and ethical standards of the profession, including academic freedom and self-governance, and to educate and protect its members.

Academic freedom is not free. Founded in 1915, the AAUP defends academic freedom and tenure, advocates collegial governance, and develops policies ensuring due process. The Arkansas Conference was reactivated in 1992 and now has members on every campus in the state.
