Graduate Awards
Graduate Assistantships
In the academic year 2007-2008, 22 graduate students received financial support. Of these, seven received graduate assistantships and matching awards from the Walton Foundation (Doctoral Academy Fellowships). One student was supported by the Arkansas Archeological Survey, two by the Center for Advanced Spatial Technologies, three by the Honors College, five from the King Fahd Center for Middle East and Islamic Studies, and 12 by the Department of Anthropology.
Arkansas Graduate Fellowship in Anthropology
A scholarship for a full-time graduate student in anthropology is available to one graduate student in good standing. The award is renewable for one year.
Unless told otherwise, all applicants who are accepted for graduate studies will be considered for all financial support opportunities available to the department.
Arkansas Archeological Survey Assistantship
The Arkansas Archeological Survey selects a student to receive “The Davis Internship Award in Public Archeology” to augment his/her research assistantship. This individual, known as the Davis Scholar, will receive partial funding for approved internships with public archeology agencies following his/her first and second years of graduate study. The Davis Award was made possible by a special endowment named for Professor of Anthropology Emeritus and State Archeologist Emeritus Hester A. Davis. A second year of funding is based on satisfactory academic performance.
Undergraduate Awards
Arkansas Undergraduate Scholarship in Anthropology
A need-based scholarship is available to a full-time junior or senior undergraduate anthropology major. The scholarship is renewable for one year, as long as a 3.0 grade point average is maintained. All enrolled sophomore anthropology majors will be considered for this scholarship.
Samuel C. Dellinger and Margaret J.and Michael P. Hoffman Endowed Scholarship
This award is given to an outstanding anthropology undergraduate major interested in North American ethnology or archeology.
Margaret Hoffman is Assistant Professor of Anthropology Emeritus and
Associate Curator Emeritus of the University Museum at the University
of Arkansas. Michael Hoffman is Professor of Anthropology Emeritus
and Curator Emeritus of the University Museum at the University of
Arkansas. Samuel C. Dellinger was a Professor of Zoology and Director
of the University Museum at the University of Arkansas.
Robert L. Stigler, Jr. Scholarship
This award is given to an undergraduate anthropology student from Jefferson County, Arkansas, and is awarded by the trustees of the Robert L. Stigler Jr. Endowment. The award was made possible by a trust from Mr. and Mrs. Robert L. Stigler from Pine Bluff, Arkansas, in memory of their son, Robert L. Stigler, Jr., who received a Ph.D. in Anthropology from Columbia University, where he was employed from 1954 until 1962. The Robert L. Stigler Jr. Endowment also supports a lecture series in archaeology.
