INTERESTS

My research interests span several domains that might be labeled "techno-archaeology." They include archaeological computer applications (particularly GIS), remote sensing & geophysical prospecting, and quantitative methods, especially spatial analysis methods, as they relate to human spatial behavior. I also have an interest in lithic technology.

Naturally, I love computers.

My principal focus currently lies in archaeological prospecting through geophysical surveys, where I have extensive experience in geomagnetic, electrical resistivity, electromagnetic induction, ground penetrating radar, and other methods. I have conducted geophysical and archaeological projects in the Great Plains, Great Basin, Plateau, Southwest, West Coast, Arctic, New England, and the Mexican Highlands of North America. I have also worked in Europe (Germany, Northern Ireland, Spain) and India. Some of these projects may be viewed in the Archaeological Remote Sensing Library of Geophysical Imagery, and give one a sense of x-ray vision (illustrated by magnetically revealed storage pits in a North Dakota site, at right). My archaeological focus lies in the Middle Missouri River villagers of the Dakotas and the prehistoric hunters-and-gatherers of the Rocky Mountains.

RECENT RESEARCH PROJECTS Click here

To promote the growth of American geophysics, I support the web site: North American Database of Archaeological Geophysics (NADAG). I am currently Associate Editor for Archaeological Prospection, and on the editorial boards of: Geoarchaeology, Journal of Archaeological Method and Theory, and Journal of Quantitative Anthropology. I have been a Consulting Editor for Mathematics and Statistics for American Antiquity, and a member of the Board of Directors of the Plains Anthropological Society.

LABORATORY

I direct the Archeo-Imaging Lab, which has a complete suite of geophysical survey gear for magnetic, resistivity, EM, and GPR surveys.
