Professor Mary Jo Schneider
Dr. Schneider joined the Anthropology faculty at the University in 1969. Her dissertation was an ethnographic study of a predominantly black rural community in eastern Arkansas. The study was looked at the human effects of agricultural mechanization and the shift from agricultural to industrial employment. Much of Dr. Schneider's early research was funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and U.S. Department of Education and focused on issues such as health care, education, and disability among rural minority populations in the Southern U.S. (especially Arkansas). Dr. Schneider teaches courses in anthropological theory, Southern U.S. culture, and gender. She has served as Department Chair since 1993. In 1995 she received the University of Arkansas Alumni Association Faculty Distinguished Achievement Award. Dr. Schneider is a past chair of the University Faculty, the Campus Council, and the Committee on Tenure. She is a member of the Teaching Academy and has received recognition for teaching from Fulbright College of Arts & Sciences. Dr. Schneider is the author or co-author of more than 50 articles and 40 technical reports and has received more than $225,000 in grant support. SPRING SEMESTER COURSE, 2003
