Prefixes and Suffixes...
hydro<...>ic acid
- "Hydro" is ONLY used for acids that do NOT contain oxygen. These are all binary acids.
- Examples:
- H2S = hydrosulfuric acid
- HBr = hydrobromic acid
- Other Examples:
- H2S, H2Se, H2Te, HBr, HCl, HF, HI

-ic acid
- This ending (without the prefix "hydro") is ONLY used for neutral acids that contain oxygen and do NOT contain a metal.
- To distinguish -ic acid from -ous acid: memorize....but know that -ic acids are derived from the -ate polyatomic anions and -ous acids are derived from the -ite polyatomic anions.
- Examples:
- H2CO3 = carbonic acid
- H2SO4= sulfuric acid
- Other Examples:
- H2CO3, H2SeO4, H2SO4, H2TeO4, H3AsO4, H3PO4, HBrO3, HClO3, HIO3, HNO

- This prefix/ending combination is ONLY used for neutral acids that contain oxygen and do NOT contain a metal.
