-ous acid
- This ending is ONLY used for neutral acids that contain oxygen and do NOT contain a metal.
- Examples:
- HIO2 = iodous acid
- H2SO3= sulfurous acid
- Other Examples:
- H2SeO3, H2SO3, H2TeO3, HBrO2, HClO2, HIO2, HNO2

- This prefix/ending combination is ONLY used for neutral acids that contain oxygen and do NOT contain a metal.
- To distinguish hypo<...>ous acid from -ous acid: memorize....but know that -ous acids are derived from the -ite polyatomic ions and hypo<...>ous acids are derived from the hypo<...>ite polyatomic ions.
- Examples:
- HIO = hypoiodous acid
